Start Timer

Template, routine, or fresh tool — which one do you need?

Reach for a template when you already know exactly what you want: a 25-minute study block, a 10-minute meditation, a HIIT 30/30 workout. Templates are quick-start shortcuts — one tap opens the matching tool already configured with the right duration, so you can skip the setup step entirely and get straight to starting the clock.

Reach for a routine instead when what you're doing isn't one timer but several stages in sequence — focus blocks separated by breaks, a sear followed by a simmer, an interval circuit with rounds of work and rest. Routines chain multiple stages together and advance through them automatically; see the Smart Routines page for pre-built sequences.

And when neither fits — you need an odd duration, a different mode, or you just want full manual control — head to the full Tools library and configure a timer from scratch. Templates and routines are shortcuts into that same set of tools, not a replacement for it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

A template opens the matching tool page with the duration (and label, where relevant) already filled in — you then press the tool's own start control. This keeps every timer's start action deliberate rather than firing the instant a page loads.

Every template link always opens a real, working tool page — the pre-fill values are passed as URL parameters and only apply progressively. If a page doesn't yet read a particular parameter, you'll simply land on that tool's normal default view and can set the duration by hand.

A template is a single timer with one duration and mode pre-set. A routine is several timer stages chained together and run in sequence automatically. Use a template for one task; use a routine when several stages need to happen back-to-back.

Yes. A template is just a fast starting point — once you're on the tool page you can change the duration, rounds or label the same way you would on any other visit to that tool.

Yes — the template library covers the most common needs today and will grow alongside the Tools catalog as new timers are added.
